Learning to shoot in manual gives you the control to turn what you see into the photographs you want.

This course will help you if you want to:

  • Take better photos, whether you are an amateur or developing professional.
  • Know what those buttons and settings on your camera do, and take control.
  • Learn about composition while photographing people, animals, nature, water, landscapes and more.
  • Get sharp images every time, and learn to isolate your subject and blur the background.

What you will learn:

  • Tools and terminology - the functions of your camera and lens(es), camera handling and care.
  • What the light meter is and how to use it; metering modes.
  • How to get sharp focus; focusing modes.
  • How to expose well, and how to use ISO, aperture and shutter speed effectively (the "triangle of exposure").
  • Control depth of field (how much of your image is in focus).
  • Motion/movement effects, such as how to freeze or show movement.
  • How to read and use a histogram (it's not as scary as it sounds).
  • White balance (colour).
  • Composition techniques you can use in any sort of photography.
  • Where to go for further learning.

 

What you need:

  • Digital camera with full manual capability. This is likely to be a dSLR or mirrorless camera, which usually have interchangeable lenses. You need a camera that has features such as a light meter, control over focusing modes, metering modes, ISO, aperture and shutter speed to make the best use of what the course offers. Most compact cameras nor phones will be suitable.
